Edmonton backyard garden harvest on July 26

July 26

Today and yesterday we harvested 9 zuchinni and 8 of them were really big! Zuchinni grow fast, and before you know it, they are giant. Good for cakes, but small zuchinni is best for grilling. A little cinnamon perks up fried or grilled zuchinni.

Pole beans are starting to climb
Climbing beans

The pole beans are just starting to climb. We grow them as a late crop on an arbour trellis. Within a week we will start to harvest green and yellow bush beans. Don't let beans get too big, as they get tough in texture and taste. The pumpkins are healthy and green. They wander through our small patch of corn.

Tomatoes are still green
We are harvesting red tomatoes from the greenhouse, but the ones in the main garden are still green.

Dill in the carrots
Dill grows wild with the carrots

People love fresh dill, so we grow lots to share. Dill grows wild throughout the garden.
The carrots and beets are not quite yet ready to harvest.
The winter squash, pumpkins and parsnips won't be ready until September.

Pease are ready
Young peas
We have been enjoying fresh peas for a week. We planted a second crop of peas a few weeks after the first. They will be soon ready to eat.

The garlic crop will be ready in a few weeks. We continue to harvest kale, swiss chard, green onions, parsley and herbs. Cilantro is now flowering and we will collect the coriander seeds. Our tart cherries are ready to pick, as are the saskatoons, although the robins have eaten most of them. The haskap harvest is done. We discovered a few lemon cucumbers today. In the greenhouse, we have ripe cherry tomatoes and a lemon boy.
